    Navigating the mental healthcare and legal system can be confusing and stressful for any family in the midst of a crisis.  Join NAMI: Barrington Area to learn how to best utilize the support systems available to you.

    NAMI: Barrington Area’s panel of experts such as first responders, mental health clinicians and an assistant state’s attorney from the mental health court system will provide insights and share helpful tips, strategies and solutions.

    You will learn:
    – Communication and intervention techniques to de-escalate stressful and potentially violent situations
    – How to have the “best” possible outcome when you call 911
    – Where to turn for sustainable solutions to prevent future crisis
    – How the legal system can assist in getting treatment for a loved one who won’t accept treatment
    – How to maximize ER visits and treatment programs

    Andy Mahoney is a recognized expert and pioneer in the field of counseling the gifted and talented.  He is the founder of The Center for Identity Potential – a leading provider of counseling and consultation services geared specifically to gifted, talented and exceptional people.  During his presentation Andy will share his expertise on what it means to be gifted, how to address academic underachievement, and how undiagnosed learning problems can impact gifted and talented students.

    Join Barrington Police Chief David Dorn, Assistant Chief John Burke, and several other Barrington police officers for “Coffee with a Cop” on Wednesday, October 4, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Cook Street Coffee. 
    Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative to promote dialogue between local police officers and their communities. Moms! Bring your young children to meet the friendly officers and check out their vehicles!

    In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, Barrington will host its annual Public Safety Open House on Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Public Safety Building at 400 N. Northwest Highway.

    Citizens have the opportunity to meet and greet fire personnel and learn valuable safety information. Kids can come see rescue vehicles, try some of the equipment, enjoy refreshments, and meet Sparky the Dog. Special entertainment will be presented by Master Ron!

    Join Mandy Burbank, LCSW from AMITA Health/Alexian Brothers Behavior Health and Angie Berthlesen, owner of Social Me Savvy and Social Media Savvy Parents as we discuss the intersection of technology, social media, child development, and parenting.

    Mandy will bring her expertise as a licensed clinical social worker to discuss how technology interacts with the social and emotional development of children and how we can use that information to inform our parenting.

    Angie will talk about the latest trends, updates to relevant social media sites that kids are using, and safety concerns such as Snapchat’s new feature that allows anyone to see your child’s location.

    Parents will leave our Tech Talk with a better understanding of how technology effects our children at different developmental stages, effective parenting techniques as they relate to technology, and takeaways that you can use in your own family.

    While an RSVP is not required, it is much appreciated.

  • 17th Annual Barrington Scarecrow Fest

    Barrington’s annual Scarecrow Festival returns Saturday, October 21, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park in downtown Barrington.

    This family-friendly event is FREE and open to the public and will feature pony rides; scarecrow, pumpkin and cookie decorating; and fun games for the kids.

    Bob the DJ will be on hand to delight the crowd with his special costume and favorite spooky songs. Pumpkins, cookies, and materials for scarecrows will be provided; festival goers may bring clothing and accessories to personalize their creations.

    There will also be a variety of food options which will be available for purchase. Be sure to stop by for some festive family fun!!

    National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day 
    The Barrington Police Department at 400 N. Northwest Highway is a drop-off site for prescription drugs on National Prescription Take-Back Day, October 28th, 2017.
    This event aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for abuse and medications.
    SImply bring your old and no longer needed prescription drugs to the Barrington Public Safety building on October 28th for safe disposal so that your unused medication doesn’t fall into the hands of someone who it may harm.
